Tortuguero is accessible only by water. From the cruise terminal, the journey involves:

The Canal Tour Experience

Spectacled caiman: Smaller than American crocodiles, caimans rest in the shallows and on partially submerged logs throughout the park. Usually 1–2 meters.

Howler and spider monkeys: Both species are common in the Tortuguero canopy. Howlers often wake you up before the boat even leaves the dock.

Great green macaws: One of Costa Rica's most endangered birds. Tortuguero is one of the most reliable locations in the country to see them — look in cecropia and almendro trees.

River otters: Shy and fast, but regularly spotted in the calmer side channels in the early morning.

Herons, egrets, kingfishers, anhingas: The canal edges are consistently productive for waterbirds.

Manatees: Present in the park's lagoons, though sightings are not guaranteed. October–December sees increased manatee activity near the river mouths.

Sea Turtle Nesting Season

The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) nests on Tortuguero's 35-kilometer beach from July through October, with peak activity in August and September. During this period, authorized nighttime tours allow visitors to observe females laying eggs on the beach under strict protocol — no lights, no flash photography, certified guide control at all times.

If your cruise calls in port between July and October, a daytime canal tour can potentially be combined with a nighttime turtle observation (the nesting tours require separate permits and advance booking).
